Belgian Waffle Recipe
With this easy Belgian waffle recipe, making tasty waffles is easier than ever before. You can have fluffy waffles in no time at all, and the kids love ‘em!
First and foremost,you need to make sure your waffle iron is preheating. You can use your standard square waffle iron. Although Belgian waffle irons are round and a little deeper, these will work fine as well.
The nice thing about some waffle makers is that they heat them from the top and the bottom as well, so you don’t need to flip them.
Belgian Waffle Recipe Ingredients
As far as the ingredients go, you’ll need the following:
- Two Cups of All Purpose Flour;
- Two Table Spoons of Sugar ( a little bit of sweetness, but don’t go overboard,we don’t want our waffles to be too sweet);
- Two Table Spoons of Baking Powder;
- One Tea Spoon of Baking Soda( this is our leavening agent and is also going to tenderize them);
- Three Quarters of a Teaspoon of Salt.
Mix all those ingredients with a whisk. Whisk it pretty thoroughly though, because those leavening agents need to be distributed evenly into the flour.
Once you’ve done that, we’re going to start adding our liquid ingredients into the mix.
The first thing we’ll add is two cups of buttermilk. Make sure you shake the container that’s holding your buttermilk before you measure it out.If you do not have buttermilk at home,you can always make it. It is really simple to do;you need to slightly heat up whole milk in a sauce pan and add one tablespoon of lemon juice for every cup. So since we need two cups we would need to add two tablespoons of lemon. Easy,right? All you wanna do is sour the milk.Now add the buttermilk.
Next come eggs but make sure you lightly whisk them before adding.And then last but not least, you need to add 6 tablespoons of melted unsalted butter.
Next, whisk the mix until it looks nice and uniform.You may have a few lumps but that’s better than overworking your flour.The reason is, when you add any liquid to the flour gluten develops. And gluten has a nasty habit of getting tougher the more you whisk.So keep that in mind.You don’t want to make tough Belgian waffles. Just mix for about thirty seconds and you should be fine.
By now your iron should be ready. A half cup measure would be great to take your batter out of the bowl and into the iron.Make sure you put half a cup of batter into each mold which should be enough for some great looking waffles.Make sure you lightly butter the iron to prevent sticking.
You will know that your waffles are done when you smell that all to familiar smell.When you open your iron, waffles should have that beautiful golden brown color.At this point you can simply top it with maple syrup or make a compote.
Enjoy!
